E-mail Print PDF

Frugal and savings are usually terms that go hand in hand when we talk about the whole of issue of saving money and coming up with ways to save money. Why should we bother to be frugal?

Are our resources unlimited? - not really. So it sounds like a good idea to maximise the use of our resources to best meet our needs and wants.

When we are not frugal we may be wasting our hard earned money on buying things that we may not necessarily need.

Being frugal will probably mean we have a little bit of savings up our sleeve for a rainy day. Being frugal means that if we get ourselves in a spot such as losing our job we have enough money saved up to get us through tough times and don’t end up feeling financially stressed out.

Being frugal is also about our reviewing our daily habits or changing our daily habits so that we become more frugal. Becoming more frugal is not a complicated task. Its actually those small things that we can do often that changes the way we think about how we use our limited resources on hand.

If you are thinking or wanting to become more frugal, brainstorm all the ways that you could become more frugal. For example, the way we shop, the way we run our household, the way we use our car, etc.

Being frugal doesn’t have to suck the life out of us and make us a killjoy. Being frugal can actually be a rewarding experience. It can show up our creativity as well when we come up with brilliant ideas on how we can become more frugal.

There are plenty of opportunities to be frugal. Recycling and free cycling are great ways to be frugal and also has the added benefit of lessening the impact on our environment. It also makes us think more creatively how we could use something that we would otherwise throw away.

Free cycling is a great way to swap unwanted loved items with someone else for something that you may be looking for. Families with children out grow their clothes and toys pretty quickly. Rather than throw these items away why not give your pre loved items to someone else who needs them.

A couple with a new baby would greatly value baby items that you no longer require. If you have a lawn mower that you no longer need because you have downshifted to a townhouse or apartment with little garden, find someone who needs it. Or how about that mobile phone that you no longer use. Drop your old mobile phone at a local phone shop that participates in recycling mobile phone parts.

The kitchen is another great area for finding ways to be frugal. Recyle used bottles for storing other food items or for making jam. Place kicthen scraps in the garden and mulch, to make the earth nice and fertile so that we can grow fruits and vegetables.
