10 ways to save money

Savemoneyhound.com finds 10 easy ways for you to start saving money now.

What are you waiting for?!

1. Cook at home instead of eating out
Cooking at home can be a fun and healthy way to cut costs on eating out. For an average household of 4 people, even if you cook at home one additional night instead of eating out, that could easily save you an easy $6,000 a year based on savings from dining out at a cost of $30 per person.

2. Make your own mean brew at home
Make your own mean brew at home. Smell that coffee in the morning right in the comfort of your own home. Using a vacuum coffee maker over the stove like the Italians do brews up a mean coffee.  Try it and save around $1000 a year at $4 a coffee for the working week.

3. Buy a used car with a new car warranty
As soon as you drive your brand spanking new car out of the new car sales yard, your car will drop in value. Consider buying a used car of one to two years old still covered under a new car warranty which could save you thousands of dollars. You get the benefits of a new car warranty without the downside of forking out the extra dollars to buy a new car.

4. Find more tax deductions

Sick of having to pay tax on your tax return every year and can’t find any tax deductions? Find yourself a good tax accountant and find more ways to get a tax refund this year and every year.

5. Buy groceries in bulk at discount prices
Source supermarkets where you can buy household items in bulk. Or when shopping at your local supermarket, look out for discounts on products that you buy at the shops every week and stock up.

6. Research before buying big household items
If you are thinking of buying or replacing a household item, for example a new fridge, washing machine, or gas hot water system, do your research on the internet to find out models, prices and the running costs of your household item. As well as shopping for an item based on your needs and the purchase price, do a comparison of the operating costs for different brands.

7. Free cycle and recycle
Before heading to the shops to buy a new product, try the free cycle network or talk to friends first to see whether you could do a trade for items.

8. Cut banking fees
Are you still paying through the nose for those banking fees that only seem to head in one direction? Up, and up. Compare banks and make those hard earned dollars work for you. Why pay extra banking fees when you don’t have to. Look for an online savings plan or an online mortgage deal, which is fee free.

9. Go local
The theme here is to go local. Go for local holidays. Buy local produce. Support your local shops. Local holidays are cheaper than overseas holidays. Buy local produce, for example, fruits and vegetables that are in season rather than imported produce.

10. How do you get to work?
Identify any ways of savings dollars on your transport costs. Look at your transport mode. Is there an easier, cheaper or healthier way of commuting to work? Cycle, walk, or use public transport. Consider reducing your car use to cut that petrol bill down. At the same time, have less traffic hassles by leaving the car at home during peak times.
