There are many ways of saving money around the house through reducing your consumption of utilities like water, gas and power. Here are some suggested ways from the Save Money Hound to cut down on your power bill.

Save Money and reduce your power consumption
If you are going to bed and need to turn the air conditioner or heater on, use an auto timer and set the timer to heat up the room for an hour or two. There is no need to leave the airconditioner or heater on for the whole night when you only really need to warm up the room for an hour or two.

Save Money and research your purchase of white goods
When you are ready to purchase or replace any of the white goods around your house for example, your washing machine, fridge etc. make sure you also research the energy efficiency star rating of individual products. With washing machines, front end loaders are generally more energy efficient.

Save Money on Lighting
The type of lighting fixtures you have in your house can make a big difference to your consumption and how much money you can save. For energy savings, choose fluorescent lights over traditional halogen spotlights. This should help to keep your power bill down.

Do an audit of your house and assess whether the lighting is adequate or excessive for individual rooms.

The type of globes can also make a difference to consumption. If you are using long life fluorescent globes, it is best to use it in areas where you will be leaving the lighting on for several hours. The intermittent switching on or off of the lights can actually consume more energy than if you leave the lights on continuously.

Save Money on Heating and Cooling
Depending on the layout of your house, try and close off rooms when heating or cooling your living areas. That way you are maintaining your living area at a nice temperature without trying to heat or cool the whole house. This should help to keep your power bill down and save money.

Save Money and shop around with for energy providers
Depending on where you live you may have a choice of more than one energy provider. Shop around to see which energy provider gives you the best option for your power needs and helps you save money.
